Novo Nordisk Will Discontinue Saxenda in the US

Novo is winding down its older daily weight-management injectable, framing the move as a portfolio decision rather than a safety issue.

    What Happened

Novo Nordisk is discontinuing Saxenda in the United States. Saxenda is the brand name for liraglutide 3 mg, a once-daily injectable GLP-1 used for weight management. The company plans to make its final shipments to wholesalers in late January 2027.

Novo has been explicit that the decision is not related to any safety or quality problem. The company describes it as a strategic portfolio decision, citing the availability of newer alternatives and declining Saxenda use.

    The Scope Is Limited

This change is narrow. Victoza, which is liraglutide for diabetes, remains on the market. Generic liraglutide lines are also still listed, including a Teva generic of Saxenda that launched in August 2025, along with products from Hikma and Meitheal. So the liraglutide molecule is not disappearing from the US market, even as the branded Saxenda weight-management product is withdrawn.

Novo's other weight-management products are unaffected. The Wegovy pen and the Wegovy pill are not part of this discontinuation.

    The Regulatory Record

The FDA shortage database reflected the change, listing the Saxenda pen as "To Be Discontinued," a status posted on August 25, 2026. That listing is consistent with a planned wind-down rather than a supply disruption.

    Switching Is Not Automatic

For anyone currently using Saxenda, there is a practical wrinkle. No FDA label provides a dose conversion from Saxenda to Wegovy or Zepbound. Because there is no official conversion, moving from Saxenda to a different weight-management drug requires a prescriber to manage the transition rather than a simple one-to-one swap.

    Why It Matters

Liraglutide is an older, shorter-acting GLP-1 peptide that requires daily dosing. Newer weekly agents have largely eclipsed it, offering less frequent injection and, in many cases, greater weight reduction. Saxenda's discontinuation reflects that generational shift in the category. The move is a business and portfolio decision, the company says, and its limited scope means diabetes patients on liraglutide and users of Novo's Wegovy products are not directly affected.
